Message from the Chair
Computer science is not Dilbert sitting in his cubicle. Technology is a discipline that is fun and exciting.
When I talk to employers, they don’t want Dilbert. They want his technical skills, but after that they value communications skills and the ability to work in teams. Computer science naturally requires people to work together on well-defined projects to design technology to solve problems.
Another important point: computer science will survive the Tom Friedman "world is flat" phenomenon. The idea that vast numbers of high-tech jobs will be outsourced to other countries is simply untrue. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, computer science is one of the second-fastest growing career field in America. Most of the economic growth is in small businesses and they are not going to send their jobs overseas.
In order for our students to succeed in the global economy, our curriculum reflects the exciting technology and career opportunities there are in computer science today.
