We are inviting applications for two PhD students to work with Prof. Charalampos Chelmis or Prof. Daphney-Stavroula Zois in our recently funded NSF SCC project at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University at Albany - State University of New York, starting as early as Summer 2018 (earlier dates can be accommodated). PhD students will receive full tuition waiver plus competitive monthly stipend, and can pursue the PhD degree in computer science or electrical and computer engineering. Students will be involved in interdisciplinary research activities on Network Science and Machine Learning to maximize the efficiency of delivering human and physical services, and also improve the sense of connectedness of residents with service providers and government structures. Specifically, students will (i) develop novel data mining methods for uncovering complex interdependencies within a dynamic sociotechnical system of of human and physical service providers, and (ii) devise novel machine learning, and control methods for dynamic decision-making under uncertainty with humans in the decision-making loop.
