Academic Honesty and Overall Regulations

Every student has the responsibility to become familiar with the standards of academic integrity at the University. Student claims of ignorance, unintentional error, or personal or academic pressures cannot be excuses for violation of academic integrity. Students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the standards and behaving accordingly. Anything less undermines the worth and value of our intellectual work, and the reputation and credibility of the University at Albany degree. Plagiarism and other acts of academic dishonesty will be punished. Read the Standards of Academic Integrity and policies in the University Bulletin (https://www.albany.edu/undergraduate_bulletin/regulations.html).

As per college policy, cheating activity, including cheating in exams, quizzes, projects, etc., WILL be written up in a Violation of Academic Integrity Report (VAIR) reported to the college administration, which includes the Computer Science Chair, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Dean, and the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Studies. This will become a part of your permanent record. Multiple incidents will result in being expelled from the college.

Details of the course policy on cheating are as follows:

  1. 1.Cheating in an exam will result in an E grade for the course. Furthermore, all the students involved will be referred to the Dean's office for disciplinary action.

  2. 2.Students MUST complete all of the homework and programming assignments independently (without using partial or full solutions by other people). Furthermore, students MUST NOT make their solutions available to others. Any attempt that violates the above requirements will be treated as cheating. Cheating in an assignment will result in the assignment and another assignment of the highest score being assigned a grade of ZERO. Students who cheat in two or more assignments will receive an automatic E grade for the course and referred to the Dean's office for disciplinary action.

Exams

All of the exams will be closed book /closed notes except that each student may bring one sheet of 8.5 × 11 paper containing written material. Missing either the midterm or the final will result in an automatic E grade for the course, regardless of the student’s performance in the other parts of the course.

Makeup Exams

Makeup exams will be given only for valid and verifiable extenuating circumstances (e.g., a major medical situation). In such a case, it is the student's responsibility to contact Professor Hwang ahead of time and arrange to take a makeup exam at an alternate date/time. Makeup exams will be generally harder than the regular exams.

Homework and Programming Assignments

There will be four homework assignments and three programming assignments. The due date and the weight of each assignment will be indicated on the assignment sheet. These assignments will not be accepted after the deadline. Homework and programming assignments must be submitted electronically using the UAlbany Brightspace System. The procedure for the electronic submission will be explained in class. The programming assignments will be graded according to correctness as well as efficiency, structure and documentation.

Policy on `I’ Grades

A grade of `I’ will only be given for genuine extenuating circumstances that are beyond a student’s control after the final drop date with a `W’ grade (for the final drop date, refer to the UAlbany academic calendar). Whenever possible, the student is expected to make extra efforts to prevent this situation from occurring. The instructor will be the sole judge of whether an incomplete is warranted.

To receive an `I’ grade, both of the following conditions must be met:

  1. At the time when an `I’ grade is requested, the student’s class work must be in good standing. More precisely, the student must have a weighted average score of at least 60% in each of the following: homework assignments, programming assignments and exams.

  2. Written documentation must be supplied either by the student or by the University administration about the extenuating circumstances.

Under no circumstances will the condition for completing an I grade be that the entire course be retaken later without a new registration.

Attendance, Lateness, Use of Computers in Class

Students are strongly advised to attend the lectures since the material covered in lectures will also be included in exams. If you miss a lecture, it is your responsibility to find out the material covered in that lecture. It will NOT be possible for the instructor to conduct makeup classes. Please DO NOT disrupt the class by entering late or leaving early without instructor approval. Computers may be used during class for note taking as long as the use is not disruptive or distracting. Responsible Computing

Students with Disabilities

Reasonable accommodations will be provided for students with documented physical, sensory, systemic, cognitive, learning and psychiatric disabilities. If you believe you have a disability requiring accommodation in this class, please notify the Director of the Disability Resource Center (Campus Center 130, 442-5490). That office will provide the course instructor with verification of your disability, and will recommend appropriate accommodations. For further information refer to the University’s Disclosure Statement regarding Reasonable Accommodation found at the bottom of the document at the following website: http://www.albany.edu/disability/docs/RAP.doc.
